Much WordPress Love

The transition to WordPress for the backend of my blog is mostly complete. I'm working on the final 2% of the current design.

A fundamental principle of my design is that the user is oriented right away. The title, "my dilemma" is no help, so I had to add the by-line, "a daddy blog." And I provided a legend near the top of the sidebar, who we are, and how old the kids are.

But what if the user is browsing a page in the archive? Wouldn't it be nice if the legend displayed what the ages of the kids were on that day?

Yep! A quick google revealed is_single(), get_the_time('U') and mktime(). Blammo! Now the main page shows the kids' ages today, but archived pages show the kids' ages back then!

Whee! That was pretty easy!

Your progress on this project has been particularly interesting to me, since my own blog is all old old html, hand written at that, and I was thinking about moving to a CMS like wordpress that could handle commenting and plugins for tagging and things like that. It sounds like a daunting project though!

You can't fool me. I know you've used Pivot.

Still, I'd finger you for an Expression Engine kind if guy.

neonepiphany gets props for inspiration with her movabletype-fu. I added my own zeitgeist after seeing hers.

You can now goof around with WordPress at wordpress.com. But if you install it on your own host, it is far more customizable. What tipped the scales for me? Well, the fact that two of their best themes are named Rin and Manji didn't hurt. And I know you know what I'm talking about, S3er.

Ack! How could I have forgotten my adventures with Pivot! I should give it a try sometime, here's to hoping they've gotten some of the issues I ran into cleared up. ^^

I'd definitely try EE, it's just a matter of, well, buying it. Free is, after all, my favorite flavor.

::grin:: And yes, I definitely know what you mean. ^^
