In Case of Link-Rot

If anything should happen to this journal, a backup of it should eventually appear at this location.

I don't expect or plan for anything to happen to this journal, of course! But it's always good to have a contingency plan.

Theoretically, if something did happen to this journal, you're reading this from the Google cache of the page or on the waybackmachine or something similar.

Nothing Happening Here. Move Along, Please.

Oh no! Did something happen to this journal? It hasn't been updated in 5-1/2 years... or, ironically, since you posted "I don't expect or plan for anything to happen to this journal."

Perhaps you meant, "I don't expect or plan for anything to happen on this journal."

Whatevahs, brah. I don't use LJ anymore either.

I hope you are well. Happy 2018.

Jeannie was asking me a few days ago how old your kids are now. I figure they must be in, like, grad school.
Mr. D! Yeah, I was allowing for that to be my last post at this journal, but I was reserving the right to revive it, too.

My wife is the shortest member of the family now! Both kids have outgrown her. Here's a somewhat recent pic taken at Morro Bay: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2RMgQdD184r9mqtT2

I hope you and yours are well, too. Here's to a better 2018.

I want to find your rant about fluorescent lightbulbs being a scam. Where is that? I can't remember if it was on Flickr or LiveJournal. It was really great.
Ha ha! How coincidental, I was thinking about light bulbs yesterday myself. One of my Instagram contacts mentioned that the EU regulates the types of light bulbs people can use in their homes in Europe. He's an artist, and he is less than happy with the light quality emitted by the mandated bulbs. I think my fluorescent bulb rant was on Flickr, because it was inspired by a conversation with my Flickr friend Jenn, but I can't find it. I'll poke around on LJ, but I've purged so many posts on LJ that the chance that anything interesting or fun survived is remote. I'll look around some more and if I run across that post I'll repost it here at LJ.

Well, Aaron and Maddie may not quite yet be in grad school, but they must be nearly graduates, at least! That visit was too long ago. In fact, my entire Hawaii experience is starting to seem like a long-ago dream, even though I've only been away for two years.

I realized... after commenting... that your post above did, in fact, seem to be suggesting that you were "archiving" your LJ, rather than "I don't expect or plan for anything to happen" meaning that you were necessarily going to remain active.

But now that you're back... yeah, it's probably like me being back. We'll continue to check in every three to five years!

So where did everybody go? Pastilla was on Plurk quite a bit, until she faded from there, too. Sjon Svenson remains active on LJ, posting jokes, and on Plurk, posting memes, and on Flickr, posting cooking and kitchen remodeling photos. He has been the most consistent of the old "core group" from Sparkle System Six in remaining active everywhere. I have no idea what happened to Nari, or to The Queen of the Internet herself, Zannah. Is there some cool new hangout and I missed the memo? Or did "real life" finally win out over everybody's online shenanigans?

I'm happy to see you popping in on Instagram; rarely, but consistently enough to indicate that you're still alive and aware of your social media surroundings.
I "Searched" some of your archive looking for the fluorescent bulb post, but couldn't find it through 2009-02-06, and before that, LiveJournal no longer offers pages of your feed, just daily access, which would become tedious. (So the last time you can page back is this URL https://davidd.livejournal.com/?skip=390.) You might've purged it. Shame. Your post was before this plurk: https://www.plurk.com/p/kt67li

I don't know where everybody is. I know some moved to private Discord servers (which is where my son spends his time), but I'm not on any of them. I'm on Facebook and Twitter, but I've become raging Humanist over there, not very fun to follow. (Although you understand ranting online too, so maybe you'll forgive me.) I've been thinking of alternatives to the feeds Twitter and Facebook provide, to prevent them from further insulating me from other perspectives. (Will be working on some of that today.)

Sometimes Zannah posts to Twitter. That's all I've got.

I'm happy when I see you pop up online, too. :)
