I must be in a wistful mood. Some of the songs making it into my frequently played lists are various openings and endings to dorama and anime. I've long acknowledged how effective the associate between a much-loved show and a much-loved song can be. Here's what I've been listening to...

four embedded videos after the cut... )
And for search engines and those who can't be bothered to dive into the cut, that was Sowelu's Mamoru Beki Mono, Bonnie Pink's Water Me, Ai Otsuka's Planetarium, and Namie Amuro's Can You Celebrate.

I think I just lost all my manly-man cred. Did I ever have any?

How Starbucks killed the iPhone

I purchase songs from iTunes because even if I can't buy the DRM-free version of the songs, I can remove the DRM with QTFairUse.  So, I'll always be able to take my songs with me.

I've been pretty diligent about not upgrading iTunes, just in case it becomes incompatible with QTFairUse.

One of the recent free iTunes "Pick of the Week" songs at Starbucks (I think it was Waking Up by Bitter:Sweet) required an upgrade from my crufty old iTunes 7.2 to 7.6.  I've been thinking about getting an iPhone, and in a moment of weakness, I upgraded my version of iTunes.

And sadly, that put my iTunes in a walled garden, because Apple sent a cease and desist to the QTFairUse team, and QTFairUse doesn't work with iTunes 7.6.  Now any new songs I purchase with DRM will have to have the DRM stuck to them.  I shouldn't have upgraded.

This is pretty disappointing.  iTunes feels cripped to me now, since all the songs I want are DRM-only there.  My disappointment in being stuck with the DRM at iTunes translates to the iPhone, too.  So, now I'm not so sure I want the iPhone 3G either.

Darn.  I wonder if I can regress my iTunes library back to 7.2...

Forget the hearse because I'll never die

This morning, my wife woke up singing "Bless, Lord, the Labor" to the tune of "Morning Has Broken."  It's an uplifting little tune with a message rewarding good, honest work.  It promised to be a song that'd carry me through the day.

Naturally, I threw up the horns, started in on my best Angus Young impression, and launched into Back in Black.

And you know what?

I won.  Later that morning, before I left for work, I caught her absent-mindedly singing Back in Black.

I do love that woman.

Another Attempt at a Playlist

Hmm, the playlist link didn't work in that last post.

Apparently the developers that should be working on anywhere.fm are really working on imeem.  So, let's see how a playlist link to imeem works.

Here's that playlist of I Want To Hold Your Hand (very wistful), Dear Prudence (so hopeful), and Hey Jude.

Last time we talked, we were talking about some covers that we like better than the originals.  I mentioned that I've got a CD of the soundtrack from Across The Universe in the car right now.

Here are three select songs from that playlist:  I Want To Hold Your Hand (very wistful), Dear Prudence (so hopeful), and Hey Jude.

[Edit] What the hey?  That link isn't working for most people.  anywhere.fm is really confused about that playlist.  I'll have to fix this over the weekend.  Sorry.

I knew time and tide would bring things around.  My favorite J-Pop review site began expanding coverage to include more Hello! Project type songs.  Lex just covered Perfume's Chocolate Disco:
"Even though the chorus is really repetitive and the girls just say 'chocolate disco' (it's more like CHOKOREITO DEISUKO) over and over, it's what makes the song so catchy."
Oh, just go listen at YouTube.  If it doesn't get stuck in your head, you're a better person than I.

Save $20.00

iTunes's J-Pop catalog has come a long way.  If I could have waited, I could have saved $20.00 per import CD.  (Yeah, the dollar was a lot stronger when I bought my imported CDs.  They were only $30.00 a pop.)  I'm sure connoisseurs of the arts would be happy to chime in and show me how lacking the iTunes catalog still is.  And they'd be right.  But still, the catalog is at least twice as big as it was a few months ago.

If I can't have perfection, I'll take progress.

Hypothetically Speaking...

  • Apr. 16th, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Suppose one wanted to move their MP3 of Koda Kumi's "Anytime" onto their iPod.  So, they drag it over to iTunes, but nothing happens.  They even select File->Add File To Library.., but Anytime just won't get imported.  But the song plays just fine in Windows Media Player.

Augh!  That someone would be pretty frustrated.

That someone would then probably open Anytime in Mp3tag and notice that the Codec wasn't MPEG 1 or 2 Layer III.  They'd wonder why iTunes is so picky.

Then they'd open Anytime in Audacity (with the LAME MP3 Codec) and transcode it to another file.  They'd have to trim it in a little bit to remove some popping, and they'd have to manually move the cover art from the old MP3 to the new one.

But then, they'd be able to get Anytime onto their iPod.

Hypothetically speaking.

And this is here for anybody who Googles for iTunes and "won't import" "can't import", MP3 file.

My favorite April Fool's Joke this year?

Ben Templesmith's "30 Days of Night: Blood of Christ" For a split second I thought it was real, and was ready to call Lee's and ask them to put it in my saver.

Also, welcome back Lex! Lex's original Beyond The Sea blog was taken down by WordPress.com, but he's back at beyondthesea2. Lex maintains the best J-Pop review blog I've seen.  I missed all the drama because I let my rss feed do the polling. I thought Lex was just being inactive for a while.

The V-U-Den Shrine

My other blogs are focussed on work and parenting.  I thought about converting this blog to a J-Pop blog, but that's still too broad in scope.  I've been an avid follower of all the Morning Musume graduates since 2001.  And no group better speaks to my heart than v-u-den.  They can say it better than I.

With that, I hereby rededicate this blog as the v-u-den shrine with the song, LovingAngelHeart.

Now that's bliss.  Seriously, it just makes me happy.

We're going on vacation for the week. And guess which videos I've packed for the kids?

Here's the original version of Mothra's song, vs. the crazy new-fangled Morning Musume version.

See you all in a week! (I won't be accessing the Web.)

*Twitter readers will recognize where the Gamera vs. Godzilla tweet came from, now.

[Edit] The author regrets omitting a link to this most excellent Mothra Song Alarm Clock.

Hello Nurse

I can be so stupid and predictable.  I've always admired Salma Hayek.  And hot nurses easily turn my head.  (It's convenient that I married one.)  Heck, I even liked the hot evil puppet nurses in Silent Hill.

So, I found myself strangely compelled by the song "Happiness is a Warm Gun" in the movie Across the Universe.

It wasn't until after the movie was over that I realized that yes, indeed, Salma was the hot nurse.

Oh, and I adored Prudence's rendition of "I Want to Hold Your Hand."  So sad and beautiful.
