Yesterday, while rooting around in a box of Duplo and Lego bricks for the smaller Lego bricks, I gather the family around for another one of Daddy's amazing, spellbinding lessons.

I start in on the Brazil nut effect, and explain that the phenomenon we're seeing in this box of Duplo and Lego bricks (rattle, rattle) affects cans of nuts and the terrain of asteroidsFascinating!

All I get are looks that I'm crazy, and a condescending little "That's nice, Daddy" as they went back to their business.

NotW feed

You know why I stopped reading News of the Weird? Because I started relying on my feed reader, and NotW doesn't export a feed for the weekly article.

Well, here's one: http://feed.dlma.com/notw.xml

Now I won't forget.

I should do the same for sbemail.  [Edit] SB feeds are here and here.

That's right.  You couldn't even pay me to take my printer off my hands.  Here it is.  Repurpose it as a Lego bot, you maker.  (Though, chances are, by the time you read this, I'll have to remove the listing from Craigslist.)

So, what do I do with all my e-Tickets (flights, concerts, etc)?  That's what pdfcreator and foxit reader are for.  I link to them at the bottom of my config page.  (Which I'll have to update for Vista, soon, I guess.)  If I absolutely have to print something, I can always take the pdf file to the printer.

Oops, did I forget to link a certain slow, bloated reader plugin from the creator of the PDF format?  Uh, no.  Love the format, hate their latest product.

You make the world a happier place!

The Google Operating System mentions a study where LiveJournal posts were analyzed for mood, frequency of words, and time-of-day.  The result is a recipe for happiness.  So, thanks to your posts here, the world can be a happier place.

I think that's why I continue to use my awful getting-things-done site to keep me productive than to simply twitter...

I still like the idea of a lifestream, though!

My car was rear-ended two weeks ago, and it's back from the body shop today!  Whee!

And I just found out that Google's headquarters is about two blocks from my favorite comic book shop!  Who knew?  I foresee an excursion!

Best TV guide so far

TechCrunch is right.  Couchville is an awesome, simple TV guide.  It's the almost* perfect replacement to Yahoo's slow TV listings site.

*Couchville doesn't have the convenient "record-to-tivo" feature.

Yea, Microsoft!

pleased
I had a really happy experience lately with Microsoft.  I've had problems with various early versions of the Natural Keyboard.  Either the arrow keys were not placed for optimal gamingcoding, or the F-Lock key would reset to the unpreferred state after some time.

The Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 retains the F-Lock setting that I explicitly set, and Microsoft just sent me an email by way of which I can track my rebate.  (The check was mailed on 03/18/2007.  Love that time-travel.)  I love automated rebate tracking.

I finally have a keyboard that remembers what I told it, has the keys in the right position, and I can watch my rebate roll in.

Happy Birthday, Site!

I'll be offline and away on vacation on the actual date of the anniversary (Tuesday the 20th), so let me wish my first ever homepage a happy 10 year anniversary while I can.

My, how things have changed.  That was my little static place on the web.  I didn't know any better, not that there was that much more to know (PHP 3 would officially be launched the next year).

Nowadays, instead of just uploading static content, I seem to be looking for ways to put the web to work for me.  Pipes, microformats, feeds and OpenID should make my life easier, keeping me in the loop while allowing me to stay in the flow.

OpenID, please.

How do I make every site I use support OpenID?  I'm grooving on the fact that I can now use "dlma.com" as my login, by simply adding the three little header lines, and I can then expose whichever persona I choose to the client site.  Whee!

C'mon c'mon c'mon, internet!

Install an OpenID server at your own domain.  Even though you could use your own livejournal account.  And you don't really log in to any sites that support OpenID.

But it just seems like such a good thing!  When will more sites support it?  When will more sites provide RSS/ATOM feeds?  When will the web catch up to the way I want to use it?

I just ended an email message with, "I've got it under control."

I realized that that fools no one.  "I've got it under control" means, "Only an Act of God can keep it all from going to hell."  It's right up there with, "it's all good" and is only less convincing than "no worries."

I've been working with Vista for a year.  The first time I saw this commercial (the security one), the truth of it struck me to the core.  I hate UAC.  It may drive me away.

Steve Wozniak on Intrinsic Motivation

I can't describe how happy it makes me to read Steve Wozniak's interview in Founders At Work.

Not only is the Apple ][ the primary computer that got me interested, I can identify closely being proud of the work you do at your day job, then going home, and hacking around on similar, but unrelated projects.

If only I could identify with unintentionally making boatloads of money...
